Yep. We just bought a few more 3180s and love them. Screw Motorola. We're all Kenwood from here on out.

Sounds like an IRQ conflict with the serial port, which the one machine may not have which is why it works for you. Could be TSRs running that could also interfere with communications. Any time slices that mess with the serial port is great for screwing up a radio when trying to read/write it.

Press and hold for 1 second whatever key you have designated as the OST (Operator Selectable Tone) feature, then press the B or C buttons to scroll thru the list of tones you programmed into the OST list with the s/w.

I don't have a DTMF version so this might not work for it. You have to assign "Key Lock" feature to a button. My guess would be it would have to be one of the side, front S,A,B,C, or top emergency buttons. After you program whatever button you want, to active the lock you have to press and...

I know the non-DTMF mic from the 7150/8150 mobiles works on the 7180/8180 mobiles. I'm curious if the DTMF will work, too.

Yep, a power-up message can be done. Look under Optional Features, page 2. I forget what it's called but I think it's down on the bottom right of that page/window.

I've heard of a few back from the factory that used the serial #, or the last couple of digits of it, as the p/w. Good luck with it.

The 3180 is a great radio. Excellent Rx and Tx performance, useable features, easy programmability, and very good accessories. Kenwood got me away from Motorola with this radio, and the 8180 mobile. No problems whatsoever in the 3180, 8150, or 8180 radios I have going down to Tx at 441.xxxMHz. When ...

I decided to go with the 30W 8180, as well. I couldn't justify the extra $ for the wattage when I could hit what I need to hit with even 20W. The TK8180 is a great radio though. I know a few more guys that have picked one up and they love it. Who is that company again.... Moto who?

It's soldered on, right? If so I hope you didn't burn the chip. I assume you know how to solder so.... Do you have to select the radio and head type in the s/w before reading the radio?

I know nothing about these radios but looking around the web it appears you need the CT71 cable. You've got the CT71 cable, right? If so, it sounds like either the cables got problems or it was wired incorrectly. Do you try uploading after power cycling the radio? What happens then?

TK-8180H is a great radio with nice power. My buddy's got one and I'm getting one ASA I sell my Motorola CDM1550. BTW, make sure you get the latest programming s/w because the earlier 8180 s/w doesn't do the 8180H. IRRC my Kenwood dealer quoted around $650 for the radio and remote head setup.
