squelch problem

I was wondering if anyone could give me some ideas on how to fix my problem. I have a Uniden BC 200 XLT and nothing happens when I turn the squelch dial. The scanner will turn on and scan, but will not stop scanning when I put it on manual still no noise. I hope someone can tell me how to fix this.
