EF Johnson 7640 UHF Radio

Post by Tripring2016 »

I recently obtained a used 7640 EF Johnson UHF radio made in 1998. I want to re-purpose it for a deciated radio tuned to a amateur "Ham" frequency that is used for a state wide repeater system in my state. Does anyone know if this particular radio can be programmed with the EF Johnson PC Configure software? And if so, what version would it be? I have also been told the radio can be programmed using Icom software for their Icom F420 radios. I have the OEM programing cable for the EF rig. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I know this is over a year after the post but you can use the ICOM F420 software. It is a fraction of what EFJ sold their version for. If you take note of the FCC ID on the radio, you will notice it's ICOM's FCC acceptance number not an EFJ number. I have both the F420 and 7640. Identical except for the front panel; one says Johnson, the other ICOM. As I recall, the Johnson is the ICOM F420-10 model but I don't recall if the -10 can go below 450 MHz. I never tried it. There's plenty of info on the ICOM F420 on the internet.
