Phoenix Coverage

Greetings,
I am looking at a Phoenix-SX on eBay.
The comb number is n5hh1w40tb .
Online information indicates the bandsplit as 150-174 MHz.

However, many of the eBay listings claim this comb has a split of 136-174 MHz.
Can anyone clarify this for me? I want to use this radio for APRS at 144.390 MHz.

Mike,

I don't have my books available to look upthe model number. Your probably going to find that it is the 150 to 174 range radio. In my years working with the Phoenix there are a couple of models you will fins. There is the crystal version, not many of these left areound. Most have long since been trashed. There is the narrow band Phoenix S and then there is the Phoenix SX. The SX is the model of choice. It will cover a much wider spread of RF frequency range than the S.

In the numbers that I have put onto 2 meters, some of the S models have required to have caps added to the tuned circuits. I use small silver mica caps and solder them to both the top and bottom side of the RF front end. Kind of depends on which circuit and how energetic I felt. With out the caps, you will find the receiver lacks good sensitivity on the bottom end.

The general Phoenix specs say "136-174" but the actual Phoenix SX radios are either of 2 bandsplits:

N5HH 150-174
N5GG 136-153

The N5HH1W40TB is 150-174, 40 W, 16 Channel (2 modes, 8 ch each), Non-scanning.

I have used a "HH" Phoenix for local repeaters on the high end of 2M (146-147) with slight degredation but the preformance rolls off pretty bad lower in the band.

I can use an MVS instead. I would have to send it out for programming though as I can't seem to find the software anywhere.

Does anybody know how the MVS behaves around 144.390? The bandsplit for the ones I found are 150-174 MHz as well.

I'm running a high-split Phoenix SX as a Ham base here, have made no mods to it, and it works great. On the other hand, I don't have anything below 145 in it, so I can't say how it is at the extreme bottom of the band.
