Radio Interoperability

Post by chief_501 »

Anyone know of any reasonably priced off the shelf products for radio interoperability? We are using MA/COM 800 mhz for basic communications however, we have still have mutual aid departments that use VHF high band. Need economical method to talk from one talk group to a designated VHF high band. Any one have any ideas?

I'm doing this off of 900 MHz EDACS to VHF for 1 application and to 900 conventional for another. Using the Pyramid Vehicular repeater for both of these apps. Makes a nice crossband package. I'm using a MDX radio on the 900 EDACS side, you can use that or a Orion or probably a M500 but not sure on that one. Interface was straight forward and the Pyramid works very well. I don't know cost but think it was around $1K. Check here http://www.pyramidcomm.com and see if they have something you can use.

You didn't indicate if this was to be a fixed location device or a mobile mounted device.

Bear in mind you will probably need to set up a talkgroup for mutual aid. This way when any communications shows up on the VHF frequency, it won't interfere with your normal communications.

You will need a VHF radio and an 800 MA-COM radio. They will need to be setup for back to back operation. You will need some form of interface between them to control the audio levels and the timings needed to make it all play.

There are a number of devices out on the market. You will have to look at them and see which one may fit your application the best. You might want to do a search on the batlabs index site for some of the conversations that have already been done on just this subject.

Don't forget the issues of an FCC license to cover the activities your looking to do.
