S950/990 Direct Frequency Entry
S950/990 Direct Frequency Entry
Has anyone had any experience using the direct entry mod for the S990 heads on a Rangr?
I have some working on Delta's but not the Rangr. The receive frequency does not work correctly.
It appears to me that it is possible since the mod for 6 meter works with the rangr. This leads me to believe that it is only a mathematical formula change in the software which is burned on the chip. I have also heard it is possible to correct the receive frequency error using some simple math when programming.
Any ideas?
Thanks

Re: S950/990 Direct Frequency Entry
The firmware for the S990 direct entry head is expecting the i.f. of the VHF hi band Delta. The other radios & bands have a different i.f. and it will always come out wrong. Find out what the i.f. is for the VHF hi band Delta and then find out what the i.f. is for the radio you are wanting use. Figure out the difference and then add or subtract that amount from the receive frequency you are wanting to hear and program it with that number.
It's a pain, but it will work.

That's Great. Thanks Robert. If I can figure it out, the math requirement will be worth it to be able to direct program the Rangr. I don't suppose that would work with the UHF Rangr also? Probably requires some new firmware with modified values.
Thanks,

Re: S950/990 Direct Frequency Entry
Just hex edit the EPROM image. The IF is expressed in Hertz as a 32-bit little-endian integer about five bytes from the end of the EPROM image. I think it comes set to 57500000, the IF for a B-split high-band Delta, which equals 60 61 6D 03 in little-endian hex. So, if you want to use it with an A-split high-band Delta, just change those four bytes to 40 A5 AE 02, which is 45000000 in decimal. For a high-band Rangr, just change the four bytes to C0 45 E6 04, which is decimal 82200000. Then, adding or subtracting differences of IFs for the RX freqs will not be necessary.
One problem is that the direct-entry S-950/S-990 handles the "band control bits" different than other programmers do. I think it sets them, while all of the other clear them. Practically, that means you might lose VCO lock and have to realign the rig for use with the S-950/S-990 instead of a pre-programmed EEPROM. If I can figure out where the 8051 code in the direct-entry EPROM sets those bits, I'll change it to clear them, which would solve that problem.

Fantastic 5100. Thanks for the info. That's getting right to the root. Now if i only had EPROM equipment and I could really get down to business. That has been my hold back for quite some time. Don't know what to buy. I am in the need for an EPROM interface(burner). Have software, a multi-socket cloning box(that I don't need), and an eraser already. Any suggestions on a burner that won't break the bank and is fairly universal?
Thanks

If you set the radio up as a 32-channel radio with 4-banks of channels, will the radio scan 32 channels or only 16?
I'm trying to decide to do 16*8 or 32*4.

Ok, got that settled. Does anyone know if the Niles S990 software is written smart or is it hard-coded into assembly loops like RSS and can't be run under a new computer?

I just hit my head on the wall that started this thread. Trying to program a Rangr with a S990. Ouch...
