The Radio Information Board

Hi All,

I Have a TK-880 (Ver. 1) and I need to pull some info out of the radio, for use with a repeater controller.

I need...
Carrier operated Squelch
Indication of CTCSS tone received
receive audio (to controller)
Tx audio (from controller to be Tx ed)
PTT?

On the board there are 13 through hole solder pads but I have know idea what they all do. Does anyone know what all the kenwood abbreviations are ?

Also I called Kenwood for a service manual and got stuck on hold 5 times before being dropped. Does anyone know the proper department and phone # to call, or where to buy them?

go to this site, put alh in grantee code and the rest in product code. After it returns the info click on details and there is a schematic that you can download.

The pins you are looking at are for Kenwood supported accessory boards. I only have a V2 manual (and I don't seem to have a V1 version), but most of them are identical.

As you can see, they are all serial and logic points for accessory decoder and scrambler boards made by 3rd party vendors. What you really need if you want to hook up a tone panel is the KCT-19 option cable that gives you Mic Hi, Mic E, PTT, DET OUT, COR, 13.8V, HOOK, etc. Although these lines are available from CN1-CN7 and it's possible to cross-reference those and tack-solder to them, instead of risking toasting the runs I'd spend the $20 and buy the KCT-19.

Here are the pins you are looking at:

C3=Option Code 1 (for voice scrambler code 3)
C4=Option Code 1 (for voice scrambler code 4)
C5=Option Code 1 (for voice scrambler code 5)
RD2=Serial Data input 2
DB2 (?)
E=Earth (ground)
OP=Option Board Select

SQ=Squelch Signal Output (can be programmed for COR or TOR, high or low, depending on programming)

RD1=Serial Data Input 1
TD2=Serial Data Output 2
C1=Option Code 1 (for voice scrambler code 1)
C2=Option Code 1 (for voice scrambler code 2)
FW=Firmware (?)(Probably a serial word that tells the board what firmware revision is in the radio)
TD1 =Serial Data Output 1

COR or TOR is the SQ (programable)
RX audio is the RXAO on the front display board.
you may wish to use the DEO pad which is the Detector output
TX audio is the TXAI on the front display board
PTT is best to use MPTT on the Front display Board.

An Update:
I feel kinda stupid now, I just needed a KCT-19 and off I went. DU!!!!
Some days you just have stupid moments when you get and idea of how to do something and forget about any others... Well The 880 was new to me and I don't do much with Kenwood ( I like it now and I am!) So when I opened it up I though that must be the place to attach.

Oh well, I even had the KCT-19 in a bin in the back the entire time!
