Orion VHF quit working - HELP -- FINALLY FIXED

Post by rescue161 »

I bought an Orion mobile and tried to program it with EDACS 3. It didn't like it, even when I just tried to read the radio. So I disconnected everything and was going to use EDACS 4, but upon power up (after everything was disconnected) the display is blank. It will flash for about 1/2 a second and then will go blank. I loaded up EDACS 4 and hooked the radio up. The radio shows PC PROG, but will not let me read it. It says to use Data Recovery to fix the radio. I don't have all of the data that it is asking for. I emailed the guy I bought the radio from, but it has been a few months since I bought it and I don't know if he is going to have the original codeplug. I don't even know if that will help. Are Orion radios like Motorola where you can just load the original codeplug and everything is okay? I tried to create a new 'system' and it wouldn't even let me do that. Does this thing need to go back to the 'depot'? I hope someone can help. It was kind of expensive...

Model number is: D2GMG7
VHF 136-153 MHz

Thanks in advance for the help...
Scott

Okay, I got the feature data encryption, but I don't know how to put it back into the radio. Can someone here help me get this radio back online? I am using 'EDACS 4'. Thanks

Sure I got a lot of help from 'n zero ndp'!!!

Basically he supplied me with generic Tracking Data. This is the data that is used to tell the radio what band split, wattage power output, squelch, etc. He also gave me the *.ADI file that the 'Radio Maint' program needs to recover a messed up radio. I got the Feature Data Encryption straight from Nancy at M/A Comm. She asked me for the ROM serial number (the electronic serial number that is accessible from the RSS. Once she had that, she gave the Feature Encryption that was with the radio as it left the factory.

So, in short, be sure to use the Radio Maintenance program in EDACS 4 Programmer to create copies of your *.ADI, *.TRK and *.ENC files. Make sure you do this BEFORE YOU EVEN TRY TO READ THE RADIO!!! Save these files and save them again in a different place just to be sure you don't accidentally write over them.

The radio that I have was programmed with EDACS 4 Programmer before I got it. Once it is programmed with EDACS 4 Programmer, you CAN NOT use an earlier version of software. Well, needless to say, I didn't know and tried to use EDACS 3. The software didn't like the radio and the radio didn't like the software. It gave me several errors by just trying to READ the radio. The software then locked up and I couldn't back out of it at all. I decided to shut everything down. After this, the radio wouldn't power on.

I tried to use the Radio Maint program to recover it, but it kept looking for the ADI/TRK/ENC files that I didn't have. So once I had these files in hand, I just used Radio Recovery in the Radio Maint program.

To get the radio back to normal, or at least enough to put it on a service monitor, hook the radio to the computer via RIB and cable. Open the Radio Maint program. Then turn on the radio. It should display "PC PROG". The icon at the top looks like at magnifying glass. Press this to get the radios 'Status'. It will let you know what files are not there. The last 4 icon at the top are the ones that you need to use. Two are 'Write To Radio' and two are 'Write To File'. Out of the two that are 'Write To Radio', one is for Tracking Data and one is for Feature Data. The same goes for the 'Write To File' icons. (Man, that was hard to follow...lol)

Well, you just write the data to the radio for each file that was missing from the "Get Status' function. I really can't get more in depth than that. I hope that helps and didn't confuse any one besides me...lol
