Question - Rangr stuff... Please help!

Hi everyone,

I do volunteer EMS stuff, and we're trying to get a radio set up at our station. It's somehow been left up to me, and I need some help.

We use 800mhz EDACS stuff.

I have a Rangr base station that I got a while back. The guy I got it from didn't know much about it. We hooked it up at the station, and it would transmit, but you couldn't hear anything. We took the radio out of the base station, and were trying to hook it up to an S850 control head, but don't know how to hook up a speaker. Can somone tell me what to do? Keep in mind I'm a radio idiot, so dumb it down as much as possible, please.

Also, we took the power supply out of the base station, and we were going to try to use it to power the S850. Will that work, or will something blow up?

Was this Rangr from a control station, or a wall mount remote station?
If you have model numbers, please pass them along. The control station would have a speaker in it, so don't know what the deal is w/o more info......

When a Rangr is put into a control station, it must be programmed as a "DESKTOP" unit. Can't just put an S850 on it w/o reprogging it as a mobile.

The radio was a desktop, I will try to find a number on it for you. It did have an internal speaker, the guy trying to help me hook it up said the speaker or audio amp might be bad. He then thought of the idea of just hooking up an S850 since there was an "extra" one up at dispatch.

When I got the radio, instead of having it programmed, our communications guy took the radio our of the base station, and just gave us another one. I don't know what it was programmed for, and I guess I don't understand the difference between a desktop program and a mobile program. I thought I just plug up the S850 and everything would be right with the world. Not so?

Would it be easier to try and troubleshoot the base station to find the problem, or make the thing work with the S850?

it's never as easy as it should be. sounds like the desktop station has a problem, just stick with setting it up as a mobile with a power supply.
assuming your comm guy was involved, i guess it is programmed properly now as a mobile.

your speaker will plug into the s850 power cord. (2 black wires come into a male plug) one smaller black wire needs to go to ground & 1 yellow fused wire is the hot.

on the control cable, there are 2 heavy gauge wires (red & black). power those up along with the yellow & black wires from the head & you are set.

if all of your parts are there in front of you, this should be straightforward enough.

Ok... Now I'm feeling a little better... heh

The speaker I have doesn't have a plug on the back of it. I might need to get another speaker or something, I was hoping I could just connect the wires to the correct pins, if someone could tell me what they are.

The S850 has a big red cable, big black cable, and a small (very short, small) black cable. Blacks to ground, red to power, right?

Also, I have a connector with a yellow and black wire coming out of it, the yellow has an inline fuse. Black to ground, yellow to power? This connector isn't plugged into anything, it's just loose. Where does it plug into?
