I have a dying 800mHz conventional Spectra that I use as Rx only that will eventually need replacement. I've never heard a Kenwood mobile radio before, is the audio quality and RF sensitivity on-par with Motorola mobiles?
Perhaps at the same time I should ask if a Sandy Ganz RIB can program the TK-980, if there are schematics and if I approach Kenwood directly to purchase the programming software.
Thanks anyone who can enlighten a n00b. 'net info on the TK-980 seems to be quite slim.
nOOb question: TK-980 as a 800mHz Rx (scanner)

I think I just answered my own question regarding programming software... http://www.actionradio.com/kenwoodacces ... ories.html
... and look! Windows-compatible software!

The Motorola Spectra is one of THE best transceivers ever made. Its sensivity and selectivity performance is the best of the best. However, the receiver in the TK-8180 is pretty damn good and the audio quality is nice, but it's only 3W from the internal speaker with the basic control head. I've got a TK-8150 and TK-8180 they both are loud and clear. I'm sure the 980 will be just as good in the audio. I think if you get the TK-980 tuned up when you get it you'll be fine. It should be tuned fine when you get it, but I've gotten new radios whose tunings were off.
PS, forgot to mention... Yes, the prog'ing s/w for most, if not all, Kenwood radios is easy to get and doesn't cost you your first born. Any Kenwood dealer should have it in stock or be able to get it for you. I highly suggest you get Kenwood's programming cable, too, not an aftermarket one, unless you're good at making them yourself.
