Kenwood TK-730H / TK-830 Dual Band Steady tone during TX

Got a dual band setup, all mods are made, connections are good, power is good. The display was flashing when I would change the channel, well it doesn't flash anymore but when I go to TX on UHF or VHF (VHF is radio #1, UHF is radio #2), I get a steady tone once I key the PTT button and it remains a steady tone until I cycle power to the unit. Any ideas?? Thanks in advance!!

That scenario usually means that the VCO is unlocked.....are you on the frequency edges of both bands or in the middle of the spread?

Mine did that too but only on radio 2. Turns out I had omitted cutting W-102 and jumping A to C in radio 2. It was never turning on even though the display was showing a channel. I have a scanned manual on the KRK-4DB I can email you if you want it.

So its been nearly one year since the post of this article and I have now found that my newly obtained TK-730/830 combo has the same problem.

I can sucessfully program UHF and VHF channels into the radios, and then I get the constant 'error tone' on every channel programmed in the TK-730 deck also with the flashing display. I've verified that power is going to the deck, that W102 is cut and that the jumper is between A and C on radio two. I've checked the connections on the cables to ensure that there are no loose pins or broken wires and now I am confused and out of options.

The combo is a TK-830H(G) UHF with a TK-730 (G) VHF piggybacked to it using the full featured control head with the 160 channel upgrade chipset.

Again, no problems with TX and RX on the UHF side of the house, only with VHF and have programmed everything from the 140 MHz side of the house to common 155 Public Safety channels through the 162 MHz Weather stuff with no success in TX or RX what so ever.

Its been over two weeks troubleshooting this thing and I'm finally at a loss and willing to try about anything.

Suggestions are greatly welcomed.

Was the VHF radio originally setup for ignition sense? Check and see if W101 is cut, If so reconnect it to make it work without ignition sense. PL

Did you check the order of the radios as defined in the personality? I seem to remember that the lower frequency radio had to be defined as radio 1, and the next highest frequency radio as radio 2; in your case the TK-730 must be radio 1 and the TK-830 must be radio 2.

I do remember getting this wrong at one point and the radio ended up doing all sorts of weird things.

I would also check and make sure the memory EEPROMS are the same. I'm not sure what would happen if one radio had a 160 channel and the other had a 32 channel EEPROM (or if the radio EEPROMS didn't match the one in the head), but I'm sure it wouldn't be anything good.

As far as the dualband kit,it has to be the actual dualband front covers to work,the regular 1 cable cover for a single band remote will not suffice in a dualband config.
