I have a Kenwood TK790 and I would like to know if kenwood offers a special extention cord to extend the lenght of the mic cord so that I may remotely mount the mic anywhere I want to away from the control head?
If not has anyone modified or retrofited one to do this?
I know someone who modified a Kenwood radio but it was a Ham radio with a modular style plug and he used Cat 5 data cable for that setup.
The Db25 connector really isnt an option for be based on where the transceiver unit is mounted, too far to run the cable and I really dont feel like taking things apart again to route the new cable.
Well if you had a friend that was real good with crimping cords, and you had a spare mic cord, I would cut it a few inches from the main connector, crimp and 8 pin RJ45 on it, and extend it that way. I have done this with Motorola, but never tried a kenwood....
You should be able to get an RJ45 coupler at Radio Shack or a good electronics (not TVs, vcrs, etc!) shop, or http://www.digikey.com or http://www.mouser.com and then just use that with another RJ45 cord. I think I wouldn't go longer than 10' overall. Try it and see what happens.
The radio end is not available from Kenwood. You could go inside the head and tap off three wires from behind the mic jack, mic high,Ptt and ground, and run them out near the six pin molex plug.
