RANGR Programming (?) problem

Post by kbmp0992 »

I'm dealing with a RANGR and an S825 system head, and I'm not experienced with it. I am more familiar with Spectras.

The problem I'm having is related to the "busy" light, channel guard, scanning, and the microphone hangup switch. As I understand it, by design, if the hangup is enabled, the radio should stop scanning when the mic is off hook, and the squelch should open up. Unfortunately, the busy light is always on when it is not scanning. If I push the scan button, the busy light goes out. When the radio receives a signal in scan mode(correct CG tone - I did not try this w/o our tone), the busy light comes on, and won't go out until I push the PTT button. In general, the CG does not seem to be working on the receiver, although it works fine when transmitting. It communicates OK with the other radios, but this is getting annoying. I don't want to hear "other" signals.

I've tried different settings for anything related to the microphone hangup, and I have reviewed the channel guard settings. I have tried different S825 heads, but I only have one drawer. We are operating in the 450-470 range, not that it matters, I guess.

Any ideas? What else should I be looking at in the program? Could the problem be in the drawer?

First of all the busy light needs to be off for the head to start
scanning. if the busy light is staying on, one of two conditions
are present. First, if the squelch is sett too low, the receiver
thinks there is a signal and the busy light comes on. Normally
you will hear open squelch noise out of the speaker if you take
the mic off hook or go into the monitor mode. If the busy light
stays on after taking the mic off hook and you don't hear anything
out of the speaker, you need to look into the monitor circuit and
see why your not going into the monitor mode. Someone may
have forced the radio to CG only with a wire change someplace.

Second, the head will not go into scan as long as the busy light
is on. If you push the scan button and the busy light stays on,
you need to find out why. The first step I would try is to pull off
the antenna from the radio. Just don't try transmitting with it
removed. If the busy light still stays on with no antenna, make
sure the squelch setting can be adjusted up and try to put out
the squelch noise in the speaker. Normally only one or two up
pushes of the squelch button will make the busy light go out.

Third, for the radio to stop scanning when you take the mic off
hook, that will depend on how the head is programmed. I
always program my heads to scan while off hook. Some people
don't like this mode and set the option to stop scanning when
the mic is lifted. It is kind of how you want the radio system to
funtion. You set this feature with the software. Without looking
in the software of how your head is set ip, you have no idea how
yours should function.

Your first step in trouble shooting this problem is to get the busy
light to go off.

Tried a bunch of things to no avail. Yesterday, we put another drawer in it, and it works perfectly. I guess the channel guard section of the original drawer was toast.
