TK-840

Post by timleon »

I just picked one of these up for cheap, it a range 1, so everything is good there.

my only problem:

how do I program this thing to scan more than 2 channels?
do I have to enter all my conventional channels I want to scan as individual systems? I would like to have 2 systems, each with about 14 groups and be able to scan whatever system is selected. I just can't do it.

I think I set the "aux" button for D/A, but that seems to have no effect, it does add or delete the arrow indicator, but does so on every frequency.

by the way, this will be conventional only, and I would like someway to delete nusiance channels from the scan list.

CAN ANYONE HELP ME............. I'm lost.

It has been about 6 or 7 years since I used an 840. But, my recollection is the radio will work in conventional only mode.

Programed as follows:

Sys 1 Freq 1=462.650
Sys 1 Freq 2 =462.625
Sys 1 Freq 3 =453.675

Sys 2 Freq 1=462.500
Sys 2 Freq 2=462.700
Sys 2 Freq 3=462.600

Now if Sys1 is selected and scan is pressed, 462.650 and 462.500 will be scanned. Then if go up one system, 462.625 and 462.700 will be scanned. Go up one more system, and 462.600 and 453.675 will be scanned. If will not scan all freqs in system 1. Then if you select system 2 scan all those freqs.

Think of stacking all the freqs you want to scan together in the first "slot" of each system. Then in the second "slot" a different set of freqs for a different scan list.

My memory may be poor as I don't have the radio any longer. Give it a try

When you have system 1 selected, Freq 1 and Freq 2

The 840 is a nice little radio but SCAN is a PIA... It doesnt scan channels but 1 channel per bank. Think of it as scanning up and down instead of across the channels.

Exactly. I agree with OHGARY. That is what my poorly written example was attempting to convey. That is what I recall also. I was able to fill up all the banks with frequencies, but it would only scan the first, or second, or third, etc. freq in every bank. As you jump from Sys 1 to Sys2 etc. you changed your scan list.

So you have to think slightly differently when programming the radio

Thanks guys. I finally figured it out.

you can put a ton of conventional frequencies in these radios....300 something.

BUT- it will only scan 32 conventional channels. Just like you guys said, only the first channel in each system is scanned. But that is fine, as I am only using 17 channels I want to scan. My first system also has all GMRS frequencies that I don't need to scan, all other systems include only the first group.

the thing that really flustered me was programming the scan list. Every other Kenwood I have had (not too many) used some type of icon to indicate the channel was IN the scan list. This radio lights up the triangle icon to indicate channels that are NOT in the scan list. Once I figured that out, everything came together.

Thanks Guys

There was a firmware update that solved the scan issues.

That's great. To what version of FW did you have to go? What does it do differently?

Thanks
