S850- Conventional?

Post by Threeshot223 »

I was fooling around with the EDACS 1 software and noticed that, when creating new frequency sets, the sofware gives an option- Trunking or Conventional. Now, am I to assume (hopefully) that programming a Conventional frequency set will remove the need for all the other EDACS infrastructure (GETC, IMC, etc.)? Basically what I'm asking is whether programming a conventional frequency set will allow for "true" conventional operation or not.

Good question
are you willing to give it a try?
worst case scenario is that it wont work, it shouldnt damage the radio or the head just save a copy of the contents in case you need to re-load the old info.

Sure! I'll throw a bunch frequencies that I can find into the radio and see what I can come up with. Maybe a FRS channel or two and see how far the range REALLY is on those little FRS handhelds!

Well, is anybody selling the RIB needed to program an S850? The radio shop didn't really have any experience with EDACS so couldn't tell me, but what they did say is that each programming will cost $30.

But, on a side note:
I think that conventional ops is possible. I was scrolling through the systems in the control head. There's 2: "BENNING" and "BENNING-CVN"
Now, when I had BENNING selected, after about a second or so the display would show "* NC *". I suppose that this is the phone equivalent of not having dial tone (no connection...NC?)
But, "BENNING-CVN" didn't give such a response. I don't know if it'll tx or rx, but I guess I'll find out soon enough.

"benning" must have been fort benning army base in GA. the military is a big lo-split uhf EDACS user.

i think the EDACS RANGRs are capable of 48 conventional freqs max. that radio wont stretch up too far. probably not even up to 430 with good sens. or VCO lock.
