I recently purchased a new laptop computer and has no serial adapter. I purchased a USB 2.0 to Serial adapter from tiger direct and installed KPG49D and KPG89D for our radios and it works great.. Only thing you need it a high speed 2.0 UBS to serial adapter for it to work properly. Kenwood does not support it, but it does work!!
here is the link to the adapter I have..

USB to Serial Adaptor

Re: USB to Serial Adaptor
I hope it's ok to bump this old thread, but I had a similar problem awhile back. I have a TK760H radio with kpg29d (I think) software that runs in DOS. I couldn't get it to communicate with the radio through a USB-serial-programming cable connection. Is there a windows based software for this radio? Or any other solution? I ended up using a laptop from the 80's but it's not ideal.
Re: USB to Serial Adaptor
Kenwood does offer a Usb to serial adapter.

Re: USB to Serial Adaptor
From what I have learned and tried, with many frackin ups, if it is a DOS program, DOS looks at the serial port (comm port), directly, as in wire to wire. This goes up to windows 98. After that, Billy designed windows to communicate with the serial port thur software first, then thru the port. The old dos programs will not work thru these new systems. It has to access the port directly, not thru software. Hope this helps.
