Kenwood TK-272G

Post by medtech3405 »

I am an EMT and I just purchased a Kenwood TK-272G radio. I have a few questions about this radio (I will admit I am new and know nothing about two-way radios, but willing to learn). Can this radio be programmed to work the same a pager? Does this radio have the Identifying tone when it keys up? And last but not least what programming software and cable will be needed to program this radio and where can they be purchased?

Sort of. A page function is available that a 2 tone signal will set off. We set ours with one memory programmed to our dispatch frequency, but the speaker is silent until triggered by a 2 tone page alert. Unfortunately, unless I have just failed to figure out how to program it, you can only have one pair of tones. It would be nice to have 2 tones, one for the EMT's and one for Fire, but so far I haven;t figured out how to do it.

I'm not sure what you are asking. I suspect the answer is no, but I really don't understand the question.

And last but not least what programming software and cable will be needed to program this radio and where can they be purchased? Asking or telling is a violation of board policy, but I think my response will be acceptable under the circumstances. I use KPG-56D for programming as provided by my dealer. As for where to get it, I would not recommend anything but genuine Kenwood ... so you need to talk to your dealer. Ask him about the cables as well. I have the cables they provided on the dept desktop computer, and decided to get an extra set for my laptop. I found one on ebay ... just what I needed and a very good price. WRONG! Get the real thing.

I've been working with these radios for quite a while, and am still learning things about them. The software assumes you know what it is capable of and fully understand the features and functions. I suspect I have found a couple things my dealer either didn't know or just didn't tell me.
I don't know much about 2-way radios but I'm over 50 and can't remember not having one around. Everything from Buddy and Citi-fone to Icom and Kenwood.

Its not against board policy to ask what software and where to get it, its only a no-no to ask someone to send you a copy, ask where a "bootleg" copy can be acquired, or send or offer to send a "bootleg" copy. Asking, or telling, where to legally obtain software is fine. As for programming cables/cradles/adapters, the schematics for these are posted/traded all the time, and this doesn't violate board policy, either.
