GE Delta Scanning Question

Post by Jim1348 »

I just had a hand-me-down GE Delta installed in my car. I have no user manual for it, so please excuse my ignorance. I am accustomed to Motorola where the selected channel is the absolute priority channel. Can the GE Delta be configured this way? If so, is it programmable by the operator or is this something that needs to be done with software. I have used Rangers that stop scanning when the microphone is taken out of the holder. The Delta keeps scanning when you pick up the microphone and I like that, however, if I transmit on a channel other than Priority 1 or 2, will I always get the signal on the select channel or do I need to take it off scan. I must say that this is one of the best GEs that I have ever used, but it is a little bit different than Motorola in operation. Also, does anyone know how fast the scan is on the Delta? I have this configured as a 32 channel x 4 mode set-up.

 If it keeps scanning off hook, the hook switch is not wired in. Which controlhead you using on it?? I am familiar with the S-550,and the 825 series. we use the 825's on our rangers. Easy to understand and set up scanning.

Delta Scanning

Post by Jim1348 »

I swapped out a different S-950 head yesterday. I have noticed when I adjusy the squelch it stops scanning. Is this something that can be changed with the suitcase programmer? Also, I now have Priority 1 tied to the selected transmit channel. It is very nice.

PB, just for your info the S950 / S990 heads can be programmed to scan while off hook. Don't go drawing conclusions till you know the facts.

As for the question about the head going out of scan when you press the squelch buttons, that is a firmware issue. I don't remmber which version does that, but some do and some don't. You will just have to live with it. Once set, you shouldn't have to adjust the squelch again.

Did not know which controlhead he was using at first. Now I do. I am not familair with the 990 head. I obtained one with my UHF ranger, but swapped it out for a 825 head. It was free.

From what I have read, the 990 is a excellent control head. Can be set up to be front programmable. Nice for changes on the fly.

Also remember once you have your scan set up the way you desire, that there is also a priority scan adjustment on the s950/990 heads. It is on the top of the control head and the adjustment hole is covered by a plastic plug. If I remember the proceedure correctly, you need to feed in a signal with a generator on the Priority channel near the 12 dB sinad level of .3 uV and using a small screwdriver/slotted adjustment tool slowly adjust this priority pot until the radio stops reliably on the priority channel. It is a very sensitive adjustment and once adjusted it can and will vary if you were to swap out RF decks. Since I have mainly used the 990/950 heads on RANGRS, which should be very close in operation to the deltas, your mileaga may vary.
