I need some help programming a tk-3180. I have the new kenwwod software (KPG-89d windows), and a cable (kpg-36). I cannot get the software to communicate with the radio.
I have also tried to program a tk-8180 with the same software and got the same results.
Does anybody have instructions that may help?
thanks in advance.

I am using a db25 - db9 adapter but the adapter works when I program my tk-380 (with the same cable).
I think that I may not be getting the radio into programing mode correctly.
I hold down the "S" key while turning the radio on. It says "Prog 115200" on the display. I can change the number by hitting another key. I set the baud rate on my PC. But I am not sure about the other settings.
While in programming mode I can push a button and get "sum=279C" to appear, but I don't know what that means.

You don't do anything except attach the prog/cable, then turn the radio on, then program the radio. There is no buttons that need to be pressed on the radio. You sure you've got a TK-3180 portable?.... this one, right?

BTW, I wouldn't go pushing anymore buttons when you're in that mode. That sounds like some type of test mode. You could be screwing your radio up.

Solution
I finally got ahold of Kenwood tech support (Through an authorized dealer). The "mode" I was in was for firmware upgrade.
The problem I was having was I first tried a aftermarket cable. I switched to a factory cable but never tried the basic connect. When I tried to program with the factory cable everything connected fine.
Thanks to all for the help.
